The Callers, Part II

The Callers Part II

“Mr. Ewing?”

“Yes m’boy, what is it now?”

“Got a T3S sir.”

“Another talk-to-the-supervisor? Yes, yes, patch it in. Mark Ewing speaking.”

“Yes, hello Mr. Ewing, my name is Brandon Foster.”

“Hello Mr. Foster, what can I do for you today”

“Well Mr. Ewing, I’m calling regarding the “life insurance fee” that’s been appearing on my statement…”

“Ah yes, of course, the free life insurance we’ve offered as a gift to only our best clients, for the minimum amount of five dollars a month. I see here on my database, you’re one of the lucky few who were considered for this wonderful reward program.”

“Yes Mr. Ewing, but the thing is, I never actually accepted anything. I wasn’t told this service would be charged monthly to my bill, and now I’ve had to pay it twice, and I’d like to cancel it.”

“Now, now, my dear Mr. Foster, I’m afraid that once the service has been activated, it cannot be deactivated for the remainder of the year. Since the first charge to your account wasn’t objected to within the first 30 days, the service was deemed as accepted, and it will remain active until a year has passed. If within a year you still want to cancel it -which I highly doubt once you see the benefits you’re getting- you can call within the first 30 days and see to it then.”

“Yes of course, I understand perfectly, I’m sorry for the inconvenience sir, I actually understand quite well, my own company works the same way…”

“Good man Mr. Foster, is there anything else I can help yo---“

“Well now, isn’t that a coincidence? Mr. Ewing, first name Mark?”

“Yes, that’s…”

“Of course! The world is so small isn’t it? I have your name right here on my desk, your contract with us started today! My, my, how exciting… I bet you’ve been waiting for this day for a whole month now, huh?”

“I beg your pardon Mr. Foster, but I don’t understand.”

“Well, you did get our letter didn’t you? The one offering you free sex for a whole year when you accepted our services?”

“This is preposterous, never in my life have I---“

“Yes, I have here, on your file the exact date on which you got the letter. One month and one day ago, and within the first 30 days, you didn’t call to cancel the service, so it was assumed you accepted it.”

“Listen here you quack…”

“Oh my, what a pity you’re at work and won’t enjoy it yourself. Oh, but I’m sure the missus at home has a proper ID, so don’t you worry.”

“I’m calling the police right now! I don’t know which kind of sick joke you think you’re playing at, but you have no idea what this’ll do to your credit history, I’ll, I’ll… ”

“And isn’t that just grand? You are one of the lucky few for whom this contract shall be fulfilled compulsorily for a whole year! Mr. Ewing, I must congratulate you on your good judgment.”

“That’s it, good bye, I don’t have to listen to this nonsense anymore!”

“Oh wait Mr. Ewing, one last thing, seeing as how you’re one of our premium clients, you needn’t worry about your location when the due date comes. Our offices around the world, will be there to fulfill every one of your needs, wherever you are. Complimentary service. Have a wonderful day Mr. Ewing.”

“Listen you---you… Nathan! Nathan! Get in here this instant!”

“Y-yes Mr. Ewing?”

“I want that phone number tracked,  I want a detective in here immediately, I want that son of a bitch to never be able to get a buck loaned to him, not even by his own mother! Now boy! What the hell are you waiting for?”

“Yes, Mr. Ewing. Right away sir… uh sir, actually… there’s a detective for you on line 3.”

“Mark Ewing.”

“Mr. Ewing, I’m Detective Dawson. I’m calling from your home sir, I’m afraid there’s been an incident…”
